Every time an election comes around, we each have candidates to campaign for and support. But what are our criteria for choosing which candidates to vote for? How do we know if they are the right choice? And does our duty as citizens end with voting?

We always hope for good leadership for the development of our country. Yet, as many people say, why is it that no matter how many presidents have come and gone, we still face numerous economic and social challenges? Who is to blame? Is it the citizens, or the politicians we trust to lead us?

As a democratic country, we have a system where the citizens choose their leaders through voting, governed by representatives elected by the people. The future of the country depends on us because we are the ones selecting the candidates who will lead us. Making sure that everyone has equal privileges and human rights. No one is above the law, not even those in government.

Compared to other countries, we are still fortunate to have the right to choose our leaders. Let us not take this freedom for granted — vote honestly. Voting is a sacred right and duty that requires serious consideration of who we elect to lead us. On election day, every citizen becomes equal; each ballot is a voice that expresses the spirit of democracy, making us responsible for every outcome.

It is crucial to be careful in choosing the candidates we elect. Let's approach this decision with an intellectually disciplined process involving active conceptualization, application, synthesis, and analysis of information gathered from observation, experience, reflection, and reasoning.

Let’s remember that the future of the country depends on voting for the suitable candidates. We should pray for guidance in making wise decisions when choosing candidates if we can find one who are honest and have clear intentions. We must avoid being led into poor habits or shallow reasons for voting—such as being persuaded by others, familial ties, celebrity endorsements, or any irrelevant factors. More critically, we must resist voting for self-benefit, such as being promised a government position in exchange for support.

Being critical is an essential quality. It enables us to seek out information, uncover the truth, and gain understanding. As humans, we should have the capacity to comprehend our surroundings, and with that comes the obligation to question and analyze everything.

Choose wisely. The future of one's country, especially for future generations, hinges on the citizen's electoral choices. Reflect on past candidates and winners. What were their campaign platforms? Did they fulfill their promises? What positive changes occurred during their tenure? Did they adequately represent the people? What lessons have we learned from the past?

Let’s cultivate a critical mindset, especially in today’s world, where misinformation spreads rapidly. If we want change, we must start with ourselves by making informed choices about our leaders.

Know the Candidates

Who are those running for public service? What are their backgrounds and personalities? Look into their leadership experience and performance, considering the sectors from which they come and their principles. What issues do they care about or prioritize? Will their policies benefit the majority? Do they clearly communicate their views and goals and commit to uplifting underprivileged citizens? Do they have practical public communication skills and the capacity to connect with various audiences, including foreign leaders? Observe their exchanges of opinions and public discussions. Effective public communication is vital for leaders to achieve their goals.

Voting for Integrity and Dignity

It is important to assess the character of the candidates we support. Are they involved in any illegal activities, such as fraud or corruption? Are they true to their promises? Candidates with integrity and clean character will be more effective in serving the public. Consider other people’s opinions but also do your own research to verify claims and confirm their truthfulness.

Experience in Leadership

Look into the candidates' leadership experience. What have they accomplished for the greater good? Are the candidate's positive achievements benefiting the common people? This is important because it demonstrates their ability to enact positive changes and foster development in their constituency or the country they lead.

Listening and Accepting Criticism

Good leaders are self-aware and can influence situations positively. They should listen to their constituents, creating an environment where people feel safe expressing their views and grievances. An open-minded leader welcomes constructive criticism, which is vital for national development.

Based on the information you gather, filter out the candidates who genuinely deserve your vote. We need politicians who prioritize the people's interests over their own. Unity among citizens is essential for the leadership that the country needs to progress.

Be Observant

Protect your vote. Report any anomalies you witness. Even minor fraud can lead to significant corruption once a candidate takes office. Remember, any violation of the law, big or small, is still a violation.

Be Fair

Choose wisely. Vote honestly and rationally. Fair elections uphold the spirit of democracy. Even a small amount of fraud can alter the election outcome. If we allow this practice to continue, what is the point of being a democratic country?

The election is like a hiring process for those aspiring to public service. Citizens hold the power to choose who will fill these positions. Just as an employer monitors hired candidates, we must continue to oversee the performance of those we elect to ensure they fulfill their duties.

Our role as citizens does not end with voting. We must also hold accountable those we place in office, as our trust in them is tied to our vote. Let us remember why we elected them: to establish a proper and honest government that leads our country toward progress...
